Words are so powerful, we can create joy or destruction just by speaking out loud. Once a word has been said you can never take it back, of course we can apologize and forgive, none of us are perfect. But that word has been released into the atmosphere forever. It really is profound when you think about it. I read an article about Maya Angelou some years ago and she spoke about asking people to leave her home if they began to say negative words about another person. Her conviction was so strong she spoke about escorting that person to the door when they spoke ill of someone. She spoke about how negative words can get latched on to your sofa, get into your soup pot, you get the picture. Wow negative words in your soup got to be bad, and sitting on a sofa full of bad stuff, not good at all. My understanding is how negative words can affect us all badly and how positive words can make us feel better.
Poetry now has taken on a whole new persona. The spoken word, has been used to evoke strong emotions, and leave it's listener with strong messages. When the poet speaks passionately about their subject you can be moved to tears, laughter and or action. Words are powerful.

There have been great speeches in history that have moved people to action. Jesus's sermon on the mount, Dr. Martin Luther King's speeches in the Civil Rights Movement, The Women's Movement Gloria Steinem, fast forward to The Me Too Movement. President John Kennedy said "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"
Business, cities and countries are governed by words. When marriage takes place the couple says to each other I do, a word agreement to symbolize a life long commitment.
I am a work in progress when it comes to speaking words out loud, sometimes I do well, and then there are other times I fail miserably. But I am slowly becoming conscious of the damage or the healing that can take place from the words that flow out of my mouth. Speaking is a great responsibility. Our words impact life, we can become agents of peace , hope and healing just by uttering words.
